WOULD YOU CARE TO TELL THE WORLD WHO AVERY ARCHIE IS?
I am a digital content creator! I am a video editor and videographer. I work full-time at a digital media company called Render Media where I edit and shoot. I also do freelance photography/videography/editing and during my time off I create content for the online Facebook page The Social Renaissance Project, which is a digital production group that creates content about social/racial issues that my good friend and I started a year ago.
GROWING UP, WHEN DID YOU FEEL THAT YOU HAD A PASSION FOR PHOTOGRAPHY AND VIDEO?
I first discovered videography and editing when I was in middle school. The first video I ever made was a silly video of my friend going around riding his motorcycle and I loved every minute of it! After finishing that video myself I knew I wanted to make videos and pursued it ever since.
WHAT DOES YOUR NORMAL WORKDAY CONSIST OF?
I go into work everyday and I edit-edit-edit and occasionally go to a meeting or two. We also have one day a week where we do our video shoots so on that day I am in our studio all day shooting video! I do a lot of work outside of work as well so a lot of days I come home and I edit some more for my other projects.
WHAT GEAR DID YOU START OFF WORKING WITH AND WHAT DO YOU SHOOT WITH NOW?
The first camera I ever got was a Canon DSLR I can’t remember during the first couple of years at college and was working on Final Cut Pro. I managed to save up money and get an upgrade to a Canon 60D during my last year at college and that is what I work with now along with Adobe Premiere for editing. I also use a lot of lenses and other accessory equipment to make my images really nice.
OUT OF ALL OF THOSE, WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PIECE OF EQUIPMENT?
Well I love my DSLR, it’s what I use for everything, video and photography. I recently purchased a Canon 24mm lens mostly for my street and urban photography where I’m running around the city. I have been using it a lot and I love it! The images turn out really well.
AS A BLACK WOMAN IN MEDIA, WHAT TRIALS HAVE YOU’VE FACED?
I think there will always be trials for me working in a field where there isn’t particularly a lot of people who look like me. There is always that sense of doubt when you walk in a room filled with white men that kind of dominate the field of editing and video. I’ve had people say really odd things to me and stuff like that. My abilities are often doubted. I feel I have to prove myself the moment I go into a new environment where people don’t know me, but there are a lot of positive things that come from it as well. There is a sense of community when you find other black women that work in the same medium as you and that’s what I have found to be extremely helpful. You find a community that builds each other up and wants you to succeed and I think that positive aspect trumps the negative ones.
HOW DID YOU FALL INTO WORKING FOR ONE OF THE FASTEST GROWING PRIVATE COMPANIES IN AMERICA “RENDER MEDIA”?
I applied online, haha. I was doing a lot of freelance work and internships at a bunch of different production companies and I wanted something more stable. I was trolling the entertainment websites for a new job and started as an intern at Render Media. After my internship was over, they offered me a full-time job and I was more than excited to pick it up. I love digital content and it seemed like the perfect fit for me.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE OTHER WOMEN ASPIRING TO ENTER YOUR FIELD?
Work as hard as you can and believe in your own magic! There are a lot of things that can bring you down and make you doubt your own abilities as an artist. When I started doing these things I learned everything on my own and then was thrown into different environments where I asked a lot of questions about things I didn’t know. Be pro-active in your growth as a woman in the industry by asking questions and learning as much as you can. Build a community with other women and work on your success together. Bring your own awesome, wonderful, womanly vision to things that you work on and don’t let people tell you it’s not marvelous. Also, just keep telling yourself that your work is better than all the other guys because like.. that’s what I do.
THAT’S INSPIRING. WHAT DO YOU WANT TO BRING TO THE WORLD OF MEDIA?
I want to bring in my vision. Everyone sees the world differently and I just hope that mine could be seen. Maybe someone will relate to it and maybe it will make them smile a bit.
FOR THOSE INTERESTED IN COLLABORATING AND WORKING WITH YOU, ARE YOU AVAILABLE FOR PROJECTS AND HOW CAN YOU BE REACHED?
I am! I love collaborating with people on loads of things. You can find me and my contact information on my website.
