This past week local Baltimore Rapper Chris Cassius releases his latest project “Chest Vest Music.” The project is titled based on the genre of music that he considers to be his own. “Chest vest music is just saying that you might need chest literally or metaphorically” while you listen. This is how the artist describes his new found genre of music in my interview with the musician.
On this dynamic project, it is very obvious the amount of time and energy that went into its creation. There are so many different types of beats and flows on one project, the only way I can describe it is, “Lit.” He has something for everyone on this project and that’s what I like most about it.
The project has been in the works for a few months now, but by listening to it you wouldn’t know. Songs like “Speed Dial” and “Show Girl” still bring this like hella crazy hella lit feel to it. Then the pace changes with the hardcore flows on “Hotboys” and “For Fun.”
“Competition” has to be one of my favorites on the EP, after “Showgirl”, there is just something about it. I feel like the artist is telling a pretty relevant story with this track. He starts the piece with “A real n**** will tell you about the wins and losses. But a fake n**** will only tell you about the wins.” When you think about it, he’s right. A person that truly supports you and wants you to succeed will take you through all the ways that they messed up so that you do not make the same mistakes, that is how you can know if they are sincere about their support or not.
Honestly, with that being the key message to the track, I was sold, it made me think about the relevancy of it all. The message was paired with this beat that is just so hype, you can try to listen without bobbing your head I promise, it will not work.
Top Five Top Five
When it comes to the song “Showgirl,” there is no real reason that I am so obsessed with the song besides the fact that it goes so hard. Like in the middle of a conference call dancing in the mirror, hard. The melodic beat is the perfect set up for a hit, and when it comes to the project, it works. The song for me is not deep or philosophical in nature, but that doesn’t take away from the impact it has on the project as a whole. This fact also doesn’t keep me from playing this track on repeat.
The project has been a staple for me since its early release last week. The features, the flows via Chris Cassius, and Scotty Banx productions are clearly a match made in Hip Hop heaven. But you don’t have to take my word for it, you can check out his music on all streaming sites.
You can also follow him on Instagram and Twitter @Chris_Cassius. Trust me, you will want to stay up to date on what this artist is doing. This is only the beginning.
