INTERVIEW: MEET RENOWNED DIRECTOR GEOFFREY HENDERSON

INTERVIEW: MEET RENOWNED DIRECTOR GEOFFREY HENDERSON

CAQ recently caught up with renowned film director Geoffrey Henderson, read the personal interview below:

Who is Geoffrey Henderson?

I am a very passionate person when it comes to film production and anything that’s creative. I was born in Berlin, Germany, and came to the United States in 2001. In 2004 I had a personal encounter with Jesus Christ and have accepted him as my Lord and Savior. I moved to Georgia in 2012 after I married my wonderful wife Simone and have 3 children. I believe in happiness and that we should live our lives to the fullest no matter what. I believe in logic and what makes sense aligning with the word of God. Being humble is one of my strong aspirations especially when others are lifting me up. I believe what goes around comes around and that we should make the best out of life in the small amount of time that’s given to us. I am a very optimistic person who sees the best in people no matter where they currently are on their journey.

Every day should be enjoyed and viewed as precious because they are numbered.

When did you know you wanted to produce and direct interactive video content?

My passion for producing and directing video content started in 2003. That was the first time I actually put a camera in my hand simply out of curiosity and started to record myself being chased by evil spirits. That experience coupled with my background in music production inspired me to producing and directing films.

What was the first film or material you worked on?

The first film I worked on was called “Nightmare the Change” in 2003. This film can be found on my website www.Geoffreysplanet.com.

This was my first film and was recorded on an extremely low-budget using basic equipment.

What does it take to become a film director? How does passion play a big role?

For me personally,  I believe I just fell into it. Back in the day, I was always relying on other people to help me out with my music and I was tired of always being disappointed. That very thing ultimately made me want to be independent with music and with film. As previously mentioned I have a passion for doing creative things as. However, I also believe that God simply led me to direct films. I have a constant vision of what a film is supposed to look like and I think that is also one of the reasons I enjoy directing films. I believe you must have a deep hunger for making films to direct them. I believe you have to be extremely organized as there are a lot of moving parts in film production. You have to know what you’re doing all the way from the onset of the idea in your mind to the final details surrounding the finished project. At the end of the day the load will be on you and if you can’t carry it then the film will not get finished or succeed. It is also very important to build trust in your cast and crew knowing that they can completely rely on you and that they know that you know what you’re doing. At the same time as a director, you have to rely upon your cast and crew knowing that they are professionals in their craft. It is important to have that strong communication and mutual trust.

Another important thing that I have learned from my wife is to be open-minded on the movie set. Even though you are the director it is important to also listen to others and accept constructive criticism in order to grow in the art of film production.

And lastly as a director you have to make your cast and crew feel comfortable even in uncomfortable situations on the set. If they can be comfortable with you in charge, then they can be the best at what they do.

What is the experience working on Blue Collar Hustle?

The experience working on Blue Collar Hustle is absolutely tremendous. I’m having a great time doing it. Mr. Alonge, who is the creator and writer is a very talented individual. He and his sister Shani, Quentin, Roberto, Tijuana and Howard are absolutely amazing. Each one of them is professional. The story of Blue Collar Hustle is what really got me intrigued and excited. It talks about the real life of the main characters, and what life is like being a black man pursuing happiness and dreams. I also like the fact that every actor and actress is completely prepared for shooting, having all of their lines ready to go. I am very impressed with how all of them, only rehearsing twice a week, are able to get their lines down.

I really enjoy every moment on set working with the entire team we have.

I hope and pray that we will be able to finish the entire season including the follow-up seasons that Alonge has planned. Blue Collar Hustle needs to be heard and I am honored to be a part of it.

What is the side of directing that people can’t see behind the scenes?

1st: You must envision the result of the product in order to get there. You must direct in such a way that sometimes doesn’t make sense to the cast until they actually see the final production. 2nd: A director not only directs the cast but also directs the crew. You have to examine everything that goes on set including the positioning of equipment and the surroundings to the scene. The director has to be in constant communication with everyone who is on set. 3rd: What the cast and other people don’t see is that the director has the entire scene from the beginning to the end planned out. Sometimes the director instructs to film scenes in a certain order, sometimes out-of-order in order to finish the shooting on time and on schedule for the day.

Any long-term goals you have in the film industry?

Sometimes I can say I am in a blue-collar hustle myself. I am working at a full-time job, have a family with three children, and at the same time running my company as a filmmaker.

Currently, I am the CEO at my company but my long-term goal is that one day Geoffrey’s Planet will take off completely. My goal is also to become a recognized film company in the Atlanta area that not only works on major productions, but also works for other big companies providing them service with Geoffrey’s Planet. I don’t know if I would want to work for a different company even if it is a major Hollywood studio. I may consider the right opportunity from an outside company but I will always be faithful to my film company.

What films and shows have you been inspired by?

There are many films that I have been inspired by. Most of the time when I look at a movie, I look at it from the directors perspective and say “how did they get that shot?”, “the picture looks nice”, “the lighting is fantastic”, “look at the vivid the colors”, etc. Many questions go through my mind and I always love watching behind the scenes and how they make things happen. I am a drama guru. I love things that are emotional and moving but also I like comedy and action. Some of the films that inspire me are:

Passion of the Christ

Avatar

Lord of the Rings

Shawshank Redemption

Batman Begins
