West coast native Duckwrth releases his new album “I’m Uugly”. The project is nowhere near “ugly” in any sense.
Jared Lee, better known as Duckwrth, is something different. Hailing from South Central Los Angles, Duckwrth is emerging as a new and upcoming artist. His style and creativity solidifies him from other artists. Duckwrth has earned a seat in the alternative hip-hop world, alongside artists like Joey Bada$$, Isaiah Rashad, and Chance The Rapper.
The name of his album “I’m Uugly” wasn’t meant to describe him literally, or by his appearance. It trademarks the imperfections and unique characteristics he carries that sets him aside from society’s “norms” and “standards”.
This album hosts themes of creativity, attraction, observation and growth. Once you add all of those elements together, you can come out with an amazing project. “I’m Uugly” is a pleasant blend of The Neptunes and funky flows like Outkast. This 9 track tape features production from ChannelTres, LIKE, Alexander Spit, Ru AREYOU, and Sad Money. Odd Future’s Hodgy Beats and Georgie Anne Muldrow appear on this album as well.
Duckwrth talks about his upbringing in South Central in “100 Days”. “100 days for 100 rounds because everyone dies on the south side of town” the chorus says. Duckwrth describes South Central as dangerous, yet glad to be alive and aim at not becoming a statistic. Towards the end, he gives a moving spoken word describing the pain he has with the environment.
Everyone should really get hip with this kid. This project is awakening, consious, and fun all at once. What more can you ask for? Another album, maybe? Duckwrth is working on another project, which doesn’t have a release date yet. In the meantime, we’ll latch on “I’m Uugly” and jam out.
