Genevieve Nnaji becomes the first Nollywood billionaire with Netflix acquisition.
Lion Heart, written and directed by Ms Nnaji, is the first original Nigerian movie distributed via Netflix. The 39-year-old actress made her directorial debut with the film.
She sold the movie to Netflix for 3.8 million USD which makes her a billionaire when converted to Naira (Nigerian currency).
The film screened at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2018, where it caught the eye of Netflix executives. Since the release to Netflix, fans alike have sung nothing but praises for the storyline and cinematography. The movie breaks common stereotypes and misconceptions about Igbo families and Nigerians in general.
I applaud the work of Ms Nnaji and her production team for doing a wonderful job of showcasing women in a positive light in the corporate setting. If you have not watched the movie yet, what are you waiting for?
“I am thrilled that through Netflix, the film will be available to a global audience,” Nnaji, Essense Magazine
