I had the pleasure of sitting down with Marrissa Morris, founder of Missallaneous Media at The University of Baltimore. I wanted to talk to her about her most recent project.

How did you get started with photography?

Well I started in high school and all I had was a basic camera phone and I was inspired by my friends. The moments I started with where candid moments and I would upload a bunch of them and they would love it. Eventually, I would just continue that every year of high school.

So I wanted to know a bit more about this project:

This project was the first project when I started Missallaneous Media. I wanted a project that I could just focus my attention on and at that point all I knew was that I wanted to tell the story of people. And then I thought wait, Humans of New York does that already. I wanted to do something a bit different. So I started to think, what is a way that people can express themselves? I found that color is one of the easiest ways that people can use to express how they feel that day.

How it started is I would ask a person “what color do you think truly embodies you?” Someone could say yellow for instance. Then we will go into why a person feels that way about the color. Each person has a different reason for the same color so that helps influence the photos.

From there we discuss outfit choices and locations.

So what is the project called?

The project is called the Color series, I just called it what it is.

So it started with the charcoal gray right?

Yes, it’s funny because I didn’t even expect to start it with me. I just wanted a new profile picture. But then I was like, this is my color anyway so I’m just gonna go with it.

So are people reaching out to you?

Yeah! I was really surprised I didn’t think much of the series but people are really supporting me and my art. I have a great support system and people who want to do work with me. That means a lot, especially because a lot of times I feel like art is overlooked. It is not always viewed as a necessity. But it plays a big role in culture and just memories in general because pictures last so long.

So where do you want to go next?

With the color series, I want to continue this rainbow spectrum. The next project I am going to do is green. I am so excited to share it soon.

For Missallaneous Media, I would like to get into pet photography.

So where can people follow your stuff?

You can follow me on Instagram and Facebook .
