KENDRICK LAMAR DUCKWORTH
TDE Artist Kendrick Lamar released his new album last night and is already on top.
Titled DAMN., Kendrick’s fourth album came with a little promotion and 1 song, “The Heart part 4.”
Then came the video and song for the single “Humble,” released March 30th which set the anticipation for DAMN.
On April 11th, the 13 track list for DAMN. arrived with high expectations, and Kendrick did not disappoint.
The album DAMN. finds Kendrick feeling the pressures of success, his role in the universe, and remaining true to himself.
Track 2, “DNA,” is an example of him dealing with his life and how far he has come.
“I’ve got loyalty in my DNA / I’ve got poison, power pain in my DNA/ This is why I say that hip-hop has done more damage to young African-Americans than racism in recent years. “
Here Kendrick is grappling with the power that music gave him, but also his responsibility as well.
A heavy hitter is Track 3, “Yah.” Lamar went a great distance to deliver his message, by sampling Fox News.
“Fox News wanna use my name for percentage / My latest news is my niece, she’s worth living / See me on TV that’s Uncle Kendrick / Yeah that’s the business.”
A major stand out is Track 12, XXX, featuring U2. Here Kendrick takes aim at Trump.
“It’s nasty when you set us up then roll the dice then bet us up/ You overnight the big rifles then tell Fox to be scared of us / Gang members or terrorists et cetera et cetera / America’s a reflection of me / That’s what the mirror does”.
My favorite track off DAMN is Track 8, “Humble.” I felt that this wasn’t just a message, but a warning.
I felt that Kendrick warned us all about materialism and that it’s best to stay humble and keep a steady mind.
Not bad from an Artist considered by much “the best rapper alive.”
DAMN. is available for live streaming on Spotify and buy on Apple Music. Thank you Kendrick.
