REVIEW: MICK JENKINS • THE HEALING COMPONENT

Author:

Chicago native and conscious rapper Mick Jenkins informs listeners with his recipe for peace.

“Love” is the word he explains on his debut album, The Healing Component.

Since arriving on the scene in 2012, Jenkins has been named the most sought after MC of his generation.

His conscious lyrics, infused with his love for poetry, and subject matter make him not only unique, but a standout in his native home town of  Chicago.

In a city known for high crime rates, drill, Chief Keef and Lil Durk, Mick Jenkins has worked to bring in a new energy to Chi-City, along with Chance The Rapper, Vic Mensa, Noname Gypsy, and Common.

But whats most important is that Jenkins does not hesitate to speak his mind. “I find that Love can heal a lot of the hate we see in today’s society, said Jenkins about his song I Can’t Breathe, which he made in response to the Eric Garner case.

The first track starts out with Jenkins speaking to a doctor about his thoughts on making music and his love of THC.

On Track 2, Spread Love, Mick shouts out his neighborhood, while touching on all the social injustices that is currently plaguing his city. His answer is simple: Spread Love.

Track 3: Daniels Bloom, Jenkins tells all about his childhood and his struggles to make it as a successful artist.

On track 4, Strange love, Mick and Noname Gypsy reminiscence on the importance of helping one another and the role of love in the Black Community.

Drawing, Track 5, is my most favorite, not only because of the music video but because of the message it relays, specifically the words I CAN’T BREATHE.

With recent police shootings of unarmed Black Men around the United States and Black Lives Matter protesting social injustice and racial inequality, Jenkins explains what can solve the problem.

From top to bottom, Mick Jenkins proves why he is Hip Hop’s most talented and sought after. It’s because he brings back consciousness and thought-provoking content back Hip Hop.

If we all listen closely, Mick Jenkins is simply telling what the The Healing Component is to everything going on now, and that is LOVE.
