CAQ was granted access into the world of Atlanta-based artist/actor Quentin “Que-Brick” Williams. Quentin plays lead character Quan Banneker of new web-series “Blue Collar Hustle.” Read the detailed interview below:
For those new to your music, who are you and where did your stage name come from?
Who am I? I am an artist, an actor, and most importantly a father. I think of myself as someone who is very driven, very passionate and always someone who is striving to reach my goals. I have been in love with music and film since I was a kid. I can remember when all my peers used to invest in clothes and being fresh. I was the kid who loved to buy albums and movies, sit down and study them. I was watching a Stanley Kubrick film one day who I think is one of the best American film directors besides Quentin Tarantino and Spike Lee who is my favorite. I was playing with his name because I thought it was so unique. I literally just switched the Ku- for a Que- and there you have it.
Why does Que-Brick aspire to create music?
Creating Music gives me this self-pleasure that no other vice, hobby, or career could ever fill. It’s my peace. It’s how I get away from any and everything that’s going on in my life. The right song can make you feel, think, and act a certain way. I love that kind of power. I love being able to move people and motivate people through my music.
What do you like about the character you play in the web series?
Quan Banneker is truly a clear representation of me and what I stand for. His drive is so relentless and his passion is unquestionable. Does he have flaws? Of course, but that’s what make him all the more special. You see all sides of him as a man. His charm, how he is loving, also how he is so driven to create a life that’s better for him and his daughter. But the key to his character is you see him constantly trying to evolve and become a better person. I want kids who are up and coming artist, actors, or entrepreneurs to be inspired by him.
Who are some of your favorite artists you model after?
I love Kanye West, to me, he is a genius. I love how he is so vocal about his opinions. Good or bad when it’s all said and done you can always say Kanye spoke how he felt. He is a true visionary and his work will be admired for centuries. Another person is Shawn Carter aka Jay-z. He is the complete opposite. He knows how to move in a room full of vultures. He knows how to carry himself as a businessman, an artist, a husband, and a father. If you want the blueprint that’s your guy. And last I would have to say Denzel Washington. Come on has the guy ever made a bad movie? Right, a fucking legend in film lol.
What are some pros and cons about the Atlanta music scene?
Atlanta is the mecca of hip-hop now. The pros I would have to say is the opportunities to get noticed. Also, I love how you can make whatever type of music you want and you can garner a fan base. The cons are substance and content. It’s still not what it used to be. Sorry.
How has it been working with Alonge and the Blue Collar Hustle cast and crew?
First off, Alonge has been like a brother to me since the first time we met. He is, in my opinion, a genius writer. The script he has written in my opinion will be looking at for ages. He and another close friend Roberto Cruz, who plays Jose Torres in the show really believed in my music. The whole cast and crew have been fantastic. We have become a family. Geoffrey Henderson is the hardest working individual I know.
What type of impact do you want “Blue Collar Hustle” to have towards young adults?
I really want Blue Collar Hustle to change the way people think. I want it to change the way we view African-American culture. I hope it’s a tool that will inspire young adults to chase their dreams and don’t stop for anything or anyone. It’s a powerful message that has been well executed and well explored.
What are 3 tips you can give to aspiring music artists?
3 tips ….have faith, work hard, and most importantly be ORIGINAL. I dedicate my efforts to this show to my father, my grandfather, and my sister. RIP. Love You.
